How does one want to be remembered? One might ask themselves this question a lot. But “Dead Poet’s Society” shows that they do not want to be just like all the other graduates, at their school. They want to be themselves. Which by doing that, they do not want to conform to society.
Not conforming to society, can be done in many ways. Taking a step, even if its a small step to oneself is huge! Because once one takes that first step. One already have the hardest part of the process done. In the movie “Dead Poets Society.” Neil, who is the guy that is in the play, and Todd the brother of the Valedictorian, are in a scene where they are on a bridge. Talking about how Todd always gets the same birthday gift every year, and how he feels that his parents don't actually “love” him. Later on in that scene, Neil has an idea of throwing the deskset over the bridge. As Neil and Todd throw the desk over the bridge. It almost makes, and forms, Todd into a new man! Just because he took that small step, to becoming himself!
Being oneself even in bad or stressful situations, would be another way of, not conforming to society. This also makes one a better person. Because being able to be oneself in situations like those. Makes it all the more easier, and all the more better when, one does it in easier situations. So again some scenes from “Dead Poets Society.” Would be when Charlie he is the “rebal” of the group, starts smoking in the dorm room. This shows he will be what he wants to be, and will not let others boss him around or bring him down! One should know smoking is not a good thing! But it shows a lot of Character when Charlie does that.
Not conforming to the environment around one in one of the hardest obstacles in not conforming to society. But it is also the most rewarding! Scenes for this task in “Dead Poets Society.” Would be when Mr. Keating the teacher of the boys in this movie, starting off his class by making relationships with his students, and teaching his way. But not to the ways of ones teachings that this school wants him to. Him taking this step not only helps himself becoming stronger as a person, but also shows his students. That they can do it to.
One will always be judged no matter what one does. But wouldnt one rather be judged for being themselfs? Than being judged for one just trying to fit in? Become what one wants to be, not what others want one to be! Not conforming to society is never an easy task, but if Mr. Keating, a man who lost his job over being himself, and not conforming to the people around him can do it. Cant we step up and be ourselfs, and not conform to society and the people around us?
